A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

[By William Shakespeare]
PARK SQUARE THEATRE

St. Paul, MN

2006 - 2018

My production of Midsummer originated in 2006 and, with sold-out houses, it was remounted for student audiences eight times, six of which I directed myself. I always look forward to revisiting this remarkable piece of writing.

With a cast of nine, transformation is at the center of this interpretation of the play. Actors play two or three characters, except Bottom, who is the only character that interacts with all three worlds: the royal court, the rustic actors, and the the fairies.

As this production was many students' first introduction to Shakespeare, it was envisioned to be utterly clear, earnest, heartfelt, and hilarious. The industrial Edwardian feel of the production reminds us that there was a time not long ago when we still believed in fairies.
